The Priest’s Speech in Fleabag

Fleabag, a BBC show written by Phoebe Waller-Bridge

Honest, gritty, sentimental wedding speech inspiration from Fleabag?!

Fleabag stole my heart and now you taketh away! Phoebe Waller-bridge you talented, magical meanie. I’m rather gutted that this is said to be the end of the show.

I’m all fired up thinking about how it seems that I’m a sucker for wedding speeches that expose the vulnerability of love, the pain, the outright doom! But where there is darkness, there is light and all that. Like Leonard Cohen says, ‘There is a crack in everything, that’s how the light gets in’.

It began with Neil Gaiman…

I based my first ever styled shoot on Neil Gaiman’s poem and wedding speech for his friends special day, ‘All I Know About Love’, which quotes,

there are beasts in the night and delight and pain, and the only thing that makes it okay sometimes, is to reach out in the darkness and find another hand to squeeze’.

Spoiler Alert, don’t read more if you haven’t seen it yet!

Finally, my dark old soul has been soothed with more honest and gritty words in one of my favourite TV shows, Fleabag. Andrew Scott who plays the priest so very well, getting many of us all flustered as the storyline unravelled, displayed a mic drop speech that went like this;

“Love is awful. It’s awful. It’s painful. It’s frightening. It makes you doubt yourself, judge yourself, distance yourself from the other people in your life. It makes you selfish. It makes you creepy, makes you obsessed with your hair, makes you cruel, makes you say and do things you never thought you would do. It’s all any of us want, and it’s hell when we get there. So no wonder it’s something we don’t want to do on our own. I was taught if we’re born with love then life is about choosing the right place to put it. People talk about that a lot, feeling right, when it feels right it’s easy. But I’m not sure that’s true. It takes strength to know what’s right. And love isn’t something that weak people do. Being a romantic takes a hell of a lot of hope. I think what they mean is, when you find somebody that you love, it feels like hope.”

I won’t say anything else that happens in the show in case you haven’t seen it yet. Personally, I am going to have to watch both of the series over and over again until I feel okay that there is no more to come.

Looks into camera…

Thank you, Phoebe, for providing me with entertainment that’s had me on the edge of my seat and yelling at the TV, but we aren’t friends now until you change your mind about a third series of Fleabag. Bye.
